Ratatouille, Le Festin…lyrics and translations

Original French Lyrics:

Thanks to Ariella (Courtesy of http://community.livejournal.com/rat_a_too_ee/9793.html#cutid1), here is the first translation in English:

The Feast

The dreams of lovers are like good wine
They give joy or even sorrow
Weakened by hunger, I am unhappy
Stealing on my way everything I can
Because nothing in life is free.
Hope is a dish too soon finished
I am accustomed to skipping meals
A thief alone and hungry is sad enough to die

As for us, I am bitter, I want to succeed
Because nothing in life is free.

Never will they tell me that I cannot shoot for the stars;
Let me fill you with wonder, let me take flight
We will finally fea . . . st.

The party will finally start
And bring out the bottles, the troubles are over
I’m setting the table; tomorrow is a new life
I am happy at the idea of this new destiny
A life spent in hiding, and now I’m finally free
The feast is on my path
A life spent in hiding, and now I’m finally free
The feast is on my path. . .
.

Google search results contain also another translation -Thanks to Akma (Courtesy of http://akmaahamed2005.blogspot.com/2007/12/le-festin-feast.html

Dreams are to lovers as wine is to friends..
Carried through lifetimes, (and) spilled now and then..
I am driven by hunger, so saddened to be…..
Thieving in darkness; I know you’re not pleased..
But nothing worth eating is free.

My hope is a banquet impatiently downed..
Impossibly full, now I’ll probably drown..
Many thieves’ lives are lonely with one mouth to feed…..
If giving means taking, I’ll never succeed..
For nothing worth stealing is………………………

……..Free at last; won’t be undersold
Surviving isn’t living; won’t eat what I’m told..
Let me free, I’ll astonish you; I’m planning to fly..
I won’t let this party just pass me by…..

The banquet is now underway, so……………………..
Bring out the bottles; a new tale has spun..
In clearing this table, my new life’s begun..
I am nervous, excited; (oh) just read the marquee!
A lifetime of hiding; I’m suddenly free!
My dinner is waiting for me.

A lifetime of hiding; I’m suddenly free!
My dinner is waiting for me….

I was somehow surprised by the second translation :). It first sounded to me like a desperate try to adapt French to English language and to give it an eatable understanding.

Car rien n’est gratuit dans la vie….  Nothing in life is free. I would say that “Nothing worth eating is free” has a totally different meaning.  In the context of Ratatouille, it works and it matches. But the beauty of this song consists in the meanings that are not strictly related to cooking 😉
